Description
Who would have thought that exploring County Cork could bring joy to everyone's faces, a phone full of smiles, and wellies (probably) muddy? Well, now you do thanks to Leahy's Open Farm. While it may seem like just a field with sheep, it's a heartfelt adventure. This gem is located in Dungourney, near Midleton. It's wonderful to think how a family's small dream has turned into a beloved place for locals and is favoured by visitors. The number of stories and friendly goats around every corner is boundless. You don't want to miss the blend of fun and nostalgia that modern farming provides; it's simply perfect.
From Pig Farming Puzzles to Open Farm Pleasure: The Leahy Family's Big Idea
So, how did this brilliant place come to be? Well, Leahy's Open Farm is a real family affair, and its story starts back in 1996 with Eddie and Eileen Leahy. Now, they were traditional pig farmers, working hard like generations before them. But the 90s were a tough time for pig farming in Ireland, with prices all over the place. Instead of just throwing in the towel, Eddie and Eileen had a lightbulb moment: why not diversify? Why not open up their farm and share their love for the countryside and animals with everyone else?
And that's exactly what they did. It didn't start as the all-singing, all-dancing place you see today, oh no. It was much simpler back then, maybe just a few friendly animals to see and some basic bits and bobs for visitors. But with tons of hard work, a refusal to give up, and a real knack for knowing what families enjoy, they've grown it bit by bit over nearly thirty years. Their kids have grown up with the farm too, and now they're a massive part of it, bringing fresh ideas but keeping that same warm, family welcome. You can tell this farm has been loved and nurtured for generations; it's got real soul.
Grunts, Bleats, Clucks, and Giggles: Meeting the Animal Crew!
Of course, the first thing you think of with an #openfarm is animals, and Leahy's has got a fantastic collection! Sticking to their roots, you'll still find some very happy pigs, probably having a good old snuffle and a roll in the mud. But the farmyard family has expanded quite a bit since the early days! You can meet gentle cows (sometimes they even do milking demonstrations, which is brilliant to see), super-woolly sheep (and if you're there in spring, bottle-feeding the lambs is an absolute must), and cheeky goats who are always up for a bit of attention (and maybe a sneaky nibble of whatever you're holding!). There are also lovely donkeys, horses, and ponies, plus a whole orchestra of clucking hens, quacking ducks, honking geese, and strutting turkeys.
But wait, there's more! Leahy's also has some slightly more unusual residents. Kids (and grown-ups!) get a massive kick out of seeing the cuddly rabbits and guinea pigs, the elegant llamas and alpacas with their super-soft wool, the massive emus, and even a couple of camels doing their thing in the Irish countryside! They've even got a reptile section with snakes, and some very entertaining meerkats. The best bit is how interactive it all is. There are petting areas where you can get up close for a cuddle, and you can often buy bags of food to feed some of the animals. It's a brilliant way for kids to connect with animals and learn where their food comes from.
Swing, Slide, Dig, and Drive! Playtime Adventures for Everyone
Leahy's understands that a terrific #familyouting requires more than fluffy animals to look at; kids need to burn off some energy. And when it comes to expansive adventure playgrounds, they certainly have that covered. There are enormous climbing structures and mind-boggling super slides that flip tummies, along with tough obstacle courses for children to hustle through. Classic swings are also available to add to the fun. All of these adrenaline-fuelled play areas are filled with energetic laughter and joyous screeches.
And for those days when the Irish weather is doing its, well, Irish thing, there's a brilliant big indoor play barn (often called the "Digger Den" or something similar) with soft play areas and loads more fun, so the rain doesn't have to stop the adventure. One of the absolute highlights for many kids (and quite a few adults, if we're honest!) is the Digger Park. We're talking real mini JCB diggers that you can operate! Scooping up sand and pretending to be a builder for the day? Yes, please! There are also pedal go-karts for racing your mates, and the ever-popular Barrel Train Ride that gives you a fun tour around part of the farm. And if you fancy a bit of a challenge, try not to get lost in their big wooden maze! Plus, keep an eye out for the Fairy Fort or Fairy Trail—a lovely touch of Irish magic where little ones can look for tiny fairy doors hidden away.
